Why I am doing this course

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

― Dr. Seuss

Thanks for checking out my website that I have set up as part of the ds106 course.  I thought I would start with the reasons I wanted to do this digital storytelling course, and go into a bit about me.

My name is Ben, and I have been always interested in the creative arts.  I began this as a sound engineer when I was 13 years old, when I started doing technical work for a church I used to attend.  I then went on to do GCSE Drama (and did pretty well), and then went into the other side of things and started looking at Media Production.

Obviously, with what I already knew, the Audio side of that came to me naturally, and ended up going to university to go and do a BA in Sound Design.  I started university almost 8 years ago now… and since then my creative side went unpractised – having worked in dead-end jobs just to pay the bills, that though I was enjoying, I never felt quite right in.

Then three years ago, I discovered tabletop gaming and specifically Dungeons & Dragons.  Since then I have ran multiple sessions of the game, which has led to collaborative storytelling with some people that until then I had never met (I used online tools to find my first group and have always played online through Virtual Tabletops) and that creative side of me resparked.

So now here I am – looking to go into creative writing, but also becoming more involved in a community through regular posts, and finding how to best use the tools at our disposal to do so – and well, give me even more experience across different forms of media.

So, I hope you enjoy what I put up on here in the near future, and that we can all learn something together.

Until next time.
